Study Abroad Programs for Pre-College Students
Academic Year Programs

AFS (American Field Service) offers year-long exchanges in which U.S. students have an opportunity to learn about the culture of another country while living with a host family and attending a local school. AFS is the oldest and largest high school exchange program worldwide.

Location: Year-long program: Denmark (incl. Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden

Dates: Year programs: 11 months duration, mid July - early June

Eligibility: Students must be in high school at time of application.

Instruction: At local high schools, in language of host country. An orientation session and intensive language workshop precede placement with the host family.

Credit: Contact home high school.

Housing: With volunteer host families..

Financial Aid: Available based on need. Scholarship money is available to qualified students.

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is a non-profit organization founded by the Swedish Ministry of Education.

Locations: Throughout Scandinavia

Dates: 10 months, departing in August

Eligibility: 15-18 years of age, with a B average

Instruction: Language camp and orientation upon arrival, attend local high school thereafter.

Credit: Contact home high school

Housing: Family homestay

Financial Aid: Limited number of scholarships available

With Youth For Understanding (YFU) International Exchange, students can choose a year, semester, or summer program in Denmark, Finland, Norway or Sweden. Additionally, a program called 13th Year Abroad is available for students just out of high school. The program is available in Denmark (where students study Business and Technology) and Sweden.

Dates: Year program: January/August; Semester program: August - December; January – June

Eligibility: Ages 15-18; good academic standing, motivation and ability to adapt to a foreign language and culture

Instruction: Denmark: one-week arrival orientation with language training, reentry orientation before returning home Finland: one-week arrival orientation followed by mid-year & re-entry orientations; Norway: 4-7 days arrival orientation, then mid-year & re-entry orientations; Sweden: students receive language tape before departure from U.S. and are tested upon arrival. Three-day arrival orientation, followed by mid-year and re-entry orientations.

SUMMER PROGRAMS

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs, which offer opportunities to spend a summer living in a Scandinavian country, is a non-profit organization founded by the Swedish Ministry of Education.

Location: Throughout Scandinavia

Eligibility: Age 15-18, with a 2.5 GPA

Instruction: Orientation upon arrival

Housing: Homestay with volunteer host family

Crossing Borders Global Studies
Crossing Borders Global Studies at Krogerup Folk School in Denmark is a unique semester program for globally-minded and socially-committed students.  The program is a life-changing experience at an exceptional value.  The program is designed to enable students to build the skills, theoretical and practical, to help them understand the issues affecting their lives.  The aim of the program is to help students think and act internationally and to make a positive difference in their lives and the world around them.  Through projects and classes the participants learn to work together across borders and across cultures toward mutual understanding.  The program includes two weeks of travel to Turkey, including Istanbul, and a three-day tour of Denmark.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

Scandinavian Seminar' programs in Scandinavia provide two- and three-week living and learning opportunities for adults. Non-credit, non-graded academic and residential programs.

Locations: Residential folk colleges, universities, and other educational and cultural institutions throughout Scandinavia.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS


NORGESSKOLEN

Norgesskolen is a three week summer school in Norwegian language and culture for children (ages 9-18) of Norwegian parents or for children that wish to maintain contact with Norway, Norwegian culture and wish to learn about the Norwegian school system. Norgesskolen is run by Nordmanns-Forbundet (The Norse Federation) whose purpose is to maintain contact between Norway, descendants of Norway and friends of Norway abroad.

Locations: The Tomb Agricultural School, south of Oslo in Østfold
county.

Instruction:Daily classes on a Norwegian language, history and culture, plus field trips and activities, such as fishing, canoeing and hiking.

Housing: Provided

Financial Aid: Nordmanns-Forbundet will attempt to provide a few stipends in case of need.
