ASF Grants and Awards for Americans
Fellowships/Grants to study in Scandinavia
The ASF's award program for study and research abroad has been the Foundation's most long-standing commitment to educational exchange. During the past 94 years, over 3,800 fellowships and grants have been given to Americans and Scandinavians engaged in study or research projects. In 2007, 80 students, professionals and artists were provided over $750,000 in total funding.
Translation Prize
ASF's $2,000 Translation Prize encourages the English translation of Scandinavian literature of the last two centuries. 2010 marks the 31st annual competition.
Birgit Nilsson Opera Competition
The Birgit Nilsson Award is awarded periodically to an outstanding young American singer on the verge of an international career.
The Birgit Nilsson Award was established in 1988 on the occasion of the 350th Anniversary of New Sweden, the first Swedish settlement in the United States. It was endowed through the proceeds of a Gala Concert in April 1988, honoring Birgit Nilsson, the legendary Swedish soprano. Winners of the prize have been Ben Heppner. Alan Held, Earle Patriarco, and Christine Goerke. Miss Nilsson (1918-2005) personally chaired several of the competitions.
Alternate Funding
Additional funding sources for study or research in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden may be available through other organizations that are not affiliated with the American Scandinavian Foundation.
