| Why: | The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) will host its Centennial Ball to close a year of events marking its 100th Anniversary. Established by Danish-American industrialist Niels Poulson and other forward-thinking leaders from business and education, the ASF promotes international understanding through educational and cultural exchange between the United States and the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. A not-for-profit organization that relies on the generosity of private donors in the U.S. and the Nordic countries, the ASF carries on an extensive program of fellowships, grants, internship placement, publishing, membership offerings and cultural activities. This past year, the ASF awarded nearly $900,000 in fellowships to scholars, artists and professionals. Nearly 30,000 Scandinavians and Americans have participated in its exchange programs since the ASF’s founding. The ASF is headquartered in New York City at Scandinavia House, the iconic Park Avenue building which opened in October 2000. As the leading center of Nordic culture in the U.S., Scandinavia House offers the public a wide range of art and design exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, readings, lectures, and children’s programs. The ASF has 7,000 members and supporters, and its journal, Scandinavian Review, in publication since 1913, is read by subscribers worldwide. ASF is a 501(c)3 organization. Its Tax ID number is 13-1623897. |
