The Birgit Nilsson Prize
 The Birgit Nilsson Prize was
established in 1988 on the occasion of the 350th Anniversary of New
Sweden, the first Swedish settlement in the United States. It was
endowed through the proceeds of a Gala Concert in April 1988,
honoring Birgit Nilsson, the legendary Swedish soprano. Winners of
the prize have been Ben Heppner. Alan Held, Earle Patriarco, and
Christine Goerke. Miss Nilsson (1918-2005) personally chaired
several of the competitions.
