Visiting Lectureship Application Instructions

 

2009-2010 COMPETITION SCHEDULE:

LETTER OF INTENT

The letter of intent should be submitted by November 1st indicating your institution’s plans to submit a full application for a Visiting Lectureship.  This can be done on university letterhead or via email (grants@amscan.org.)  The letter of intent should describe the planned visiting lecturer position, and give details (name and home institution) for the prospective lecturer if possible.  The letter of intent should also describe the institutional support that the host institution is prepared to offer, but final confirmation of institutional support will be submitted with the Visiting Lectureship Application form.  The American-Scandinavian Foundation will review the proposed plan in the letter of intent and contact the host institution if the proposed plan does not meet the guidelines of the Visiting Lectureship program.  The host institution will have the opportunity to revise their plans accordingly in time for the final application deadline.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM:

All entries must complete the Visiting Lectureship Application form and attach it to all other requested documentation. A link to the electronic application is available below. You may attach extra pages to the application form if you need more space than what is provided.  All materials must be TYPED to ensure legibility. .

Question 1        Please provide the full name and address of the institution submitting the application.

Question 2        Provide the name of the individual, and their position within the institution, who will act as the primary contact for the institution for the purposes of the application.  Use the contact’s current mailing address and contact details (phone and email). Keep the ASF updated of any changes. Please be sure to include a phone number an email where the primary contact can be reached.  In addition, please attach a resume for the primary contact (list only publications and presentations, etc. relevant to the visiting lecturer project.)

Question 3        Provide the name, home affiliation and contact information of the proposed visiting lecturer.  Please also attach a CV in both English and the native language of the visiting lecturer.


Question 6        Detail any prior affiliation that the visiting lecturer has with your institution.  For example, has he/she lectured there before, or has there been any research collaboration between the visiting lecturer and a current/past member of faculty.  Describe activities in full and provide dates.

Question 7        The Visiting Lectureship award offered by the American-Scandinavian Foundation is a stipend of $20,000.  The host institution is expected to provide support complementing the $20,000 stipend. Please provide full details of host institution support.  Additional support may be in the form of: subsidized faculty housing; international travel; insurance expenses; office and computer use; access to library and other research facilities; additional stipend support.  Please also attach a letter confirming the support from the appropriate office at your institution.


Question 8a       The visiting lecturer is expected to teach at least one course.  Please provide full details of this and any other courses that will be taught by the visiting lecturer.  Details should include: course description, graduate level (undergraduate vs. graduate), class size and coursework.


Question 8b       The visiting lecturer is expected to perform modest public outreach activities and accept conference invitations for which a travel grant of $5,000 is offered.  Please describe the planned outreach activities and list any off-campus lectures that will be given as well as any conferences that the visiting lecturer plans to attend.


SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS:

The following items must be attached to the Visiting Lectureship Application to complete the requirements for funding consideration. 

  • Resume for the host institution’s primary contact
  • CV for the Visiting Lecturer in both English and their native language.
  • Letter of interest from the visiting lecturer indicating his/her acceptance of the award conditions and intended teaching requirements. 
  • Letter from the appropriate office confirming the institutional support that will complement an award from the American-Scandinavian Foundation.
